The local branches of American West Bank helped underwrite the cost of awards for each livestock barn at the Northeast Washington Fair this year, contributing $100 per barn. The bank also donated $200 to help cover the cost of the Fat Stock Sale that is also sponsored by the Stevens County Cattlemen’s Association (SCCA). Here SCCA President Scott Nielsen receives the donation from American West Bank representatives.

Annual NEWA Fair event sponsored by Stevens County Cattlemen

The annual Fat Stock Sale sponsored by the Stevens County Cattlemen at the Northeast Washington Fair raised over $129,000 last month that went into the pockets of young producers who learned how to raise, show and sell livestock through the event.

Over 80 buyers, including many local businesses and individuals, allowed the 28 beef, 15 sheep, 65 hogs and 11 other animals including goats and chickens to sell for solid prices.

Stevens County Cattlemen’s Association President Scott Nielsen said the Fat Stock Sale is an important opportunity for young people to get started in the livestock industry.

“The kids who sell their animal through the sale have had to put in the time and effort to raise these animals to market weights and it gives them a great opportunity to learn hard work and skills within the livestock industry,” said Nielsen. “We continue to support this event because we know what it means to these kids and we are better off if they stay in our community and gain an interest in the industry.”

Nielsen said while SCCA sponsors the event, it would not be possible without the help of some tireless volunteers.

“We really want to thank our auctioneers, Larry and Carol Enright and Ron Eslick. We also appreciate the efforts from our ringmen Ted Wishon and Rick Larsen as well as Trish Barker and all the Big R store staff that helped out. We also want to recognize all the parents, volunteers and NEWA Fairgrounds staff that make this thing happen,” said Nielsen. “This is an important part of our community and our goal is to continue to sponsor it for many years to come.”

Stevens County Cattlemen donate beef to local food banks

SCCA donate beef, Monette and Nielsen

The Stevens County Cattlemen’s Association (SCCA) recently donated locally raised and processed beef to area food banks including Kettle Falls, Orient, Addy and others. Every year, SCCA works with one of their producer members to purchase a whole beef, process it and split the meat between local food banks. The donated meat helps families, senior citizens and disabled individuals to continue to have good nutrition, even if their financial situation is difficult. In order to help defray the costs of purchasing and processing the animal, local businesses have joined the effort as well. This year Gallo Meats in Colville donated half of the processing costs and Columbia Cedar also joined the beef-donation efforts by contributing $500. Pictured is Columbia Cedar Representative Angela Monette donating the funds to SCCA President Scott Nielsen.
